9. Cardiovascular disease in specific populations: Native Americans, Hispanics, women and the elderly

The Sarver Heart Center members developed the Native American Cardiology program. The program is a unique collaboration of resources between federal, state, private and academic institutions. Its physicians are proud members of the Sarver Heart Center.

The Native American program is unique in that it provides tertiary hospital care, outpatient services, telephone consultation, telemedicine consultation and preventive cardiology care for Native Americans from three areas in the Indian Health Service. These physicians also provide guidance on a national level for cardiovascular issues, care and prevention for the Indian Health Service. Clinical research studies have resulted in several publications with a special focus on elucidating cardiovascular risk factors in Native Americans with an eye towards prevention. Additional clinical research is targeting improvements in the delivery of cardiovascular care on a community level with special emphasis on improving recognition of cardiovascular symptoms in Native American communities.
